Park Trails - Geocaching

Geocaching is a recreational pursuit that brings technology and nature together.

GeocachingGeocaching is initiated by an individual hiding a cache, normally a waterproof container with small items inside, then recording the location with a Global Positioning Unit (GPS). The individual then posts the GPS coordinates along with a description of the cache on the Geocaching Web site, www.geocaching.com. Other individuals then try to find the cache. When it is located, participants sign a logbook, then take or leave a small item. They also post their find in the on-line logbook.

Three Rivers Park District wants to encourage positive use of its parks and feels that geocaching can be a good recreational activity in the parks with the following restrictions.

Rules

  • Geocaching is allowed in regional parks and park reserves within Three Rivers Park District. It is not allowed on regional trails or in special recreation features.

  • Caches must be registered with Three Rivers Park District.
Download the Geocache Site Registration Form (PDF)

  • A limit of 20 caches will be allowed for each park.

  • Caches are not to contain items that are offensive, dangerous or illegal.

  • Access to caches will be subject to the Park District ordinance including hours of operation, d designated trail uses, maintenance standards and natural resources management activities. Placement of caches is restricted to within 25 feet of a trail center line, and must not require disturbance of the park environment.

  • Caches are not to be buried. Caches are not allowed in ecologically sensitive areas such as sanctuaries and environmental preservation areas. Caches located on nature center trails must have the permission of the nature center supervisor. Some areas that are accessible in the winter may not be accessible in the spring or summer. You will be notified if your cache needs to be removed because of a trail closing.

  • Three Rivers Park District retains the right to remove, or have removed; a cache it determines to be in an inappropriate location, or if it is not registered with the Park District.
