Teaching and learning about food, farming & fiber arts

Gale Woods Farm Folk School strives to enrich lives and establish connections by inviting members of the community to gain and develop their knowledge and skills in various practical and artistic crafts. The Folk School offers a bounty of opportunities to learn skills such as gardening, farming, fiber arts & cooking all in a casual, group setting. Join us for one, or several, Folk School Workshops and open the door to lifelong learning and friendships!

2008-09 Workshop Offerings

  • Reservations are required for all Folk School workshops.
  • Most workshops are designed for participants 14 years old and up. If the description indicates Families Welcome, children 5 years old and up will enjoy participating with adult supervision.  Please indicate ages when registering.

Ornament Making
Saturday, November 15 | 1:00 pm — 4:00 pm

Just in time for the holidays! Craft a handmade woolen ornament with wool from the Gale Woods sheep. You'll leave this workshop with a good start on an attractive ornament that will make a great gift and the skills to make more on your own. All materials provided. Ages 14+. Thanksgiving Cooking

Learn how to cook and enjoy all the delicious comfort foods of fall. We'll cover special cooking techniques for root veggie stand-bys like carrots and sweet potatoes; discover the joys of rutabegas, parsnips and celeriac. You'll leave with recipes, new ideas and a satisfied appetite from sampling all your efforts in our kitchen. Ages 14+  Reservations required. #437419-01

DECEMBER

Advanced Felting
Saturday, December 6 | 9:00 — 4:00 pm

Join local fiber artist Jill Lynn to learn some advanced techniques for felting.  Jill felts using the age-old technique of wet-felting to create seamless, sculpted, and functional works of art. You’ll leave with some new skills and a start on a unique project of your own using Gale Woods Fleece. Must have some experience with felting. Ages: 14+.  Reservations required. #137425-00

Holiday Baking

Get into the holiday spirit with an afternoon of baking at Gale Woods Farm! We'll share Scandinavian and other traditional recipes true to Minnesota's culture baked with farm fresh eggs you collect. From krumkakke to lefse, sugar cookies to quick and easy fudge, you'll leave ready to enjoy the flavors of the holidays with fresh baked treats to share. There will be time for tasting, socializing and a visit to the animals on the farm. Ages 18+.  Reservations required. #137411-13

Bread Making

Try Knitting

Unravel the mystery. . . here is your chance to experience the joy of knitting and pleasure of creating usable art. Instructor Shawn Glidden from ACME Knits will teach you to cast on, the basic knit stitch and to cast off. Leave with a good start on making a small cotton washcloth. Instructor provides: knitting needles and cotton yarn for your project. (You may purchase needles at the end of class for $7.00 if interested). Ages: 14+. Reservations required.

Garter Stitch Mittens

Shawn Glidden from ACME Knits will show you patterns for a fun, comfortable mitten in garter stitch, with a bit of a twist. Learn how to pick up stitches, increase and decrease and join garter stitched edges while knitting these fun striped mittens. Pattern provided. Student provides: Two - 4 oz worsted weight yarn (210 yards each Gale Woods yarn is perfect for this!), size US 7 and 8 needles, straight or circular, whichever you prefer, darning needles and place markers.  Must be comfortable knitting to participate. Ages 14+. Reservations required.

Winter Wine and Cheese

Have you always wanted to learn the fundamentals of pairing wine and cheese? Unwind after the holiday season and greet the New Year by taking a little time for yourself. Taste a variety of different wines and artisan cheeses in a beautiful farm setting. Learn about the cheese making process and try your hand at making some of your own. Ages: 21+. FEBRUARY

Hand-Painted Yarn
Saturday, February 7 | 10:00 am4:00 pm
$60/person (Class fee: $45; Material fee: $15)
Take a break from the drab world of winter! Create your own color by learning how to dye your own Gale Woods yarn and roving. You will learn about different types of dyes and dye processes while you learn both kettle dyeing and hand-painting methods. We will be using synthetic dyes for this class. Great class for knitters, spinners, and felters--and folks who would just like to try the process of hand-dyeing. Ages 14+. Reservations required. #137425-03
