Natural Resources Management

Three Rivers Park District's Natural Resources Management section restores and protects the natural resources in the park reserves and regional parks. Management efforts strive to maintain a diversity of wildlife, complete native plant communities, and quality water resources for public enjoyment.

Forestry Management is responsible for managing natural areas to re-establish diverse northern deciduous forests, installing and maintaining landscape plantings in active use areas, and operating a native plant propagation and nursery program. This section also is responsible for the operation of Noerenberg Gardens, which is funded by the Noerenberg Trust Fund.

Wildlife Management monitors wildlife populations within parklands, re-introduces extirpated species, and oversees the management of prairie and other open natural areas. In addition, species like deer, geese, and beaver may require control to limit excessive population growth.

Water Resources Management works with neighboring municipalities to implement a water quality plan which strives to prevent further degradation of the Park District's water bodies, and identifies steps for water quality improvement. This section also works with the Operations Department to ensure acceptable recreational water quality at swimming beaches.
